Si Islands on Si(001) at 620K

STM images showing the fluxuations of islands at 620K. The edge rows of islands fluctuate the fastest, and when fluxuations at one's two ends cross, the row disappears. Due to the sticking anisotropy, it is then difficult to nucleate a new row, and the island shrinks. Note that the small lower right hand island disapears all together.
